Various Artists - 10 Years Of Piston Recordings

Piston Recordings celebrates its last ten years with this meaty new 14 track compilation. It features brand new, unreleased and exclusive tracks from a range of artists old and new who have all helped establish this label up to now. Some have been with the label since the start, some are more recent recruits that showcase the label’s A&R skills, but all of them come through with the goodness.

The label started with Portuguese artist but has grown to welcome producers from all over the world. It means their sound has broadened but stayed true to their original mission at the same time. As such there is a nice balance of lush deep house and driving tech house on display from top to bottom.

Rogerio Martins kicks off with Mingling, a seven minute deep house cut with steamy synths and big icy hi hats getting you into a hypnotic groove. Accatone’s All I Want is more bendy and wonky, with drunken bass tumbling down the scales, then We Do It Like This From Rubba J is a warm and vibe number with colourful melodies dancing above louche drums.

Elsewhere there is sombre stuff with lazy chords and pained atmospheres from Daniel Ray, loopy breakbeats from Bonetti and kicking drum programming on the driving Tenth from Upright. Eat Dust’s No More Robots is another standout cut with off kilter chords and spring hi hats that gets you on your toes.

This is a great collection of tunes to welcome new fans to the label, or as a treat for those who have always supported. It offers lots of great heat for the floor and will appeal to both working Das as well as party hungry dancers in equal measure.
