Elektrofant is an uncompromising electronic music duo from Sandnes, Norway. Their music is built on the roots of classic soulful techno while remaining eclectic and unpretentious … ‘serious fun’ is the name of the game. Consisting of Klaus Skrudland and Knut Jonas Sellevold, Elektrofant previously released an album titled Wørk! and the Flipstick EP, with that EP’s title track now regarded as a Norwegian electronic music classic. With a frenetic live show, Elektrofant were the first ever techno act to play the frosty island of Svalbard, close to the North Pole. But then they went silent in 2008, apparently gathering forces for the release of their latest album, a delightful throwback named 1992.
1992, released by Beatservice Records, is nothing less than a stunning tribute to the old school techno and dance music from the early nineties. Even more, it brings back the playful, analogue sound of Elektrofant. The staccato piano chords of “Chantelle” and “Monica”’s synth flute and organ bass notes will certainly bring back memories. There’s also the tough, sprawling groove of “Charlize”, the relatively smooth space-funk of “Bit99”, and “XTC”’s soulful downtempo drum machine moment. These are just a few highlights from a fascinating set that finds Elektrofant continuing to reinvent, surprise, and keep the dance floor grooving.
