1tbsp is a new side-project from Australian artist Maxwell Byrne (aka Golden Vessel), and “kanashī” is the project’s debut ep.
Just recently Maxwell gave us the ep’s first single “In Europe, Kinda Sad” which was met with much praise and attention from music fans, peers and music curators around the world.
This week he is excited to be sharing the “kanashī” ep with us, which is a tidy four-track collection of lo-fi house / indie dance music that could be likened to a mix between Ross From Friends, DJ Koze and Four Tet.
As Maxwell explains below, he began working on this ep back in 2019 while he was in Europe (playing a few Golden Vessel shows), and while he enjoyed the freedom of exploring different sounds & styles to what he’s usually drawn to with Golden Vessel, he still found the writing process to be quite challenge in some ways…
“I’ve been sitting on this EP for almost a year now and finally have the chance to put it out! I started making it while I was in Europe at the end of 2019. It now seems to really coincide with these sumoclic nights that Akurei and I are throwing here in Brisbane and it feels as though house music is having a big moment here which is exciting.
It has also been really nice to work outside of the Golden Vessel project and have new limitations. With Golden Vessel I’d try to make the songs as concise as possible but with these songs have more room to breathe, I can make them longer, more simple and repetitive, which can in a way be more challenging.” – Maxwell Byrne
“kanashī” is available everywhere now via sumoclic.
