Scizzorman ‘Mystical Yeast’ – out now!
For a band that has spent twenty years operating well outside Australia’s musical epicentres, SCIZZORMAN sound remarkably unconcerned with fitting into any contemporary mould. Their latest single, “Mystical Yeast”, instead doubles down on the qualities that have long defined the Perth outfit: adventurous songwriting, elastic grooves and an unmistakable willingness to follow inspiration wherever it leads. As the latest preview of forthcoming concept album How To Get Your Life Right With What’s Left, it’s an inviting introduction to a project that promises imagination over convention.
Built around an infectious rhythm section, “Mystical Yeast” finds songwriter Terry J Vinci and bassist Cody Robson tapping into years of musical chemistry. The groove remains the song’s anchor even as shimmering synthesisers, soulful vocal melodies and progressive flourishes continually reshape its surroundings. Rather than feeling indulgent, every detour contributes to the wider journey, rewarding listeners who embrace its unpredictability.
The song’s lyrical focus cleverly juxtaposes everyday modern anxieties with colourful psychedelic storytelling. Fashionable dilemmas and social gossip are transformed into something far more surreal, allowing the track to become both social observation and escapist fantasy. It’s a balancing act that never feels heavy-handed, thanks to Vinci’s conversational writing and the band’s playful sense of humour.
There’s also an undeniable warmth to the production. Recorded under time-sensitive circumstances before the relocation of Page Six Studios, the performances retain an organic immediacy that suits the band’s independent ethos. Stewart Herbertson’s expressive guitar work—particularly during the eastern-inspired bridge and climactic solo—adds further colour without ever pulling focus from the rhythm beneath.
“Mystical Yeast” ultimately succeeds because it feels completely comfortable in its own skin. SCIZZORMAN aren’t chasing nostalgia or modern trends; they’re continuing to refine a sound that’s distinctly theirs. If this single reflects the creative direction of How To Get Your Life Right With What’s Left, the album may well become one of the band’s most compelling releases yet.
