SSTG Channels Unrequited Feelings In ‘Why Did You?’

There’s a particular kind of heartbreak that comes before anything has officially begun. A few conversations become something more, expectations quietly build, and suddenly you’re left wondering whether the connection ever meant the same thing to the other person.

Indian pop artist SSTG (Shreshth Singh) explores that uncertainty on ‘Why did you?’, now accompanied by an official music video.

Released last month, ‘Why did you?’ traces a connection that moves from casual conversations and messages to imagined possibilities, before reality gets in the way. Drawing from personal experience, SSTG explores the excitement of meeting someone, the expectations that follow and the uncertainty of unreturned feelings, set against a relaxed, “chill” pop groove that keeps the track from becoming overly sombre.

The accompanying music video brings that personal element closer to the artist. SSTG filmed it during the final month of his college life, while balancing work and music. After several delays, the project has finally made its way out.

“I felt I needed to show myself instead of just releasing audio,” SSTG says, describing the video as his first music video.

For SSTG, the single reflects the contemporary pop direction he has been developing since discovering English-language pop in 2016. Based in Noida, India, the independent artist has experimented with pop, dance and EDM while developing a melody-driven style centred on personal storytelling.

With its breezy production and reflective storytelling, ‘Why did you?’ turns a familiar relationship dilemma into an understated pop track about attraction, expectation and the unanswered questions left behind.

‘Why did you?’ is out now on major streaming platforms, with the official music video available to watch online.
