An Interview with Dad Of The Year

We interviewed the dj and producer Dad of The year on the occasion of his latest release on Magician on Duty, Love EP.

Hello Martin, it’s a pleasure to have you here at Ihouseu. Well, to
start with the proper interview…. How was your 2023? What would you
highlight and what would you not repeat?

Thank you for having me Ihouseu! I appreciate it.

2023 was great! Not the kind of guy that regrets or dwell on what could have
been different. I would do everything the exact same way. This year was all
about getting better, very fast. So maybe it felt more challenging in a
way… finding my way through trials and errors, some frustrations with the
mysteries of mixdown and mastering and why it doesn’t sound like I want. Now
that my creativity is out and flowing, I felt that I needed to go back to
school and get more control on the technical side of production and on the
quality of the end result. I know what great music sounds like, I’m very
obsessive about that and not will not have peace of mind until I meet my own
standards.

What was your master release in 2023 and what are you preparing for
2024? How was the production process of Love en?

I think “Starman” on EXPmental and “Love” on Magician on Duty are definitely
the two standouts of 2023. The process of making “Love” (ha ha!) was great,
as I got to collaborate very closely with Adrian at MoD and managed to get
amazing artists like Landhouse, AmuAmu, Nährwerk, Joe Carl, Matija and
Richar El Cox on board… It’s a release I’m very proud of and the whole
experience was truly satisfying. I will be back on EXPmental to finish the
year with a remix of “Dudas” from my mentor and friend Eddy Romero.

What other releases on other labels apart from Magician or EXPmental
have you released? Any club residencies?

Also released this year on Leveldva and Hug Records… no club residency yet
😉

I had amazing residencies in the past in some of the best clubs in the
world, but I retired once in 2012. Missed out on a whole generation of
clubbers and promoters. I’m very much building my whole network again with
my new name and slowly getting known to a new generation. Instead this time
it’s all around the world, not just locally. So it’s very exciting to see
the new opportunities coming up.

And to finish DOTY, what can you tell us as interesting news for 2024?

Felt like 2023 was all about the 2024 built up. I’m very happy to say that I
will release a full EP plus a remix on the prestigious label Stripped
Recordings. I will also be part of the next MONADA V/A compilation which is
a label I love, and remixing Soble and Johnny Posh for Random Collective.
First few months should be pretty busy!
