Banku is the alias of London-based electronic music producer and visual artist Claudio Crispo. Born and raised in Naples, Italy, the blossoming artist has released a handful of EPs since his move to the UK in 2012, displaying a propulsive and wide-ranging aesthetic that encompasses house, techno, and IDM styles. Finding inspiration in his bustling cosmopolitan surroundings, Banku’s new Quicksilver EP and debut on Seattle-based label Hush Hush Records finds the versatile producer zoning in on bold, swarming, immersive techno beats. Heavily inspired by the blockbuster sounds of the 1990s UK electronic music scene, the four tracks on Quicksilver are the sonic equivalent of a svelte train speeding through a hail storm, launching off with sharp, kinetic, pulsating rhythms that become enveloped in dense, chaotic, yet intricate atmospheric textures. “Mothball” provides one of the EP’s strongest moments and is a seamless collaboration with Tallows, an American indie band from Oklahoma City fronted by singer Josh Hogsett. His strongest material to date, as well as Hush Hush’s most techno-oriented release in their quickly growing catalog, Banku’s Quicksilver EP is a physical, visceral experience that showcases merely one facet of this evolving producer’s diverse range.
