Kiko Navarro offers up another slice of sun-drenched afro-latin magic on his Afroterraneo label. Niko Bellotto's ‘Barasuayo’ features percussion and vocals by Cuban artist Naile Sosa and sublime remixes from John Beltran and Kiko himself, under his KOKI alias.
Grammy nominated Swedish / Argentine producer Niko Bellotto has been entwined with electronic music since the early 1980s, founding the acclaimed ‘Tangent Beats’ label, now running the ‘Eat My House’ imprint. Relocating to Palma de Mallorca in 2014, Niko reunited with long time friend Kiko Navarro, met multi-instrumentalist Naile Sosa and began to work on brand new music: ‘Barasuayo’ was born.
Neatly encapsulating the Afroterraneo sound, ‘Barasuayo’ is a deep and soulful house cut, characterised by warm chords and uncluttered beats, which neatly frame Naile Sosa’s spine-tingling vocal and scintillating live percussion. Ambient maestro turned genre-defying composer and producer, John Beltran turns to his Latin roots for a jazzy, percussion-led reworking, smoothed out by shimmering, anthemic strings. Under his KOKI moniker, Kiko Navarro strips ‘Barasuayo’ down to bare essentials in his ‘Beatapella’ letting the vocals ride out over evocative, tribal drums.
