Behind The Scenes of Sam Skilz & Miss MAD ‘Island Dance’
Hi Sam, congrats on your new single, ‘Island Dance’ with Miss MAD, what can we expect to hear?
Thank you very much! In simple words, ”Island Dance” is a fun mix of catchy afro beats and piano chord melodies that make you feel like you’re on a tropical island. We wanted to create something that feels like a sunny escape. The idea was to combine the energy of Afro Tech with a feel-good, island vibe.
What was the inspiration behind the track?
We started working on it while we were in Ibiza in early summer this year. The island’s energy and vibe were perfect for inspiring us. Every sound and rhythm in the track reflects the lively and relaxing atmosphere of Ibiza. We hope that when people listen to it, they feel the same joy and excitement we felt while creating it.
A departure from your usual progressive / tech sounds, this is your first Afro Tech release, what made you decide to make an Afro Tech track?
It’s not a big change from our usual style; it’s still similar to progressive house. We felt it was time to try new sounds and challenge ourselves creatively. For me, I wanted to reconnect with my African roots and explore the unique rhythms and melodies that come from that heritage. Adding those elements gives our music a fresh and exciting twist. Plus, who doesn’t love a dance track with some Afro flair? It’s all about bringing joy and energy to the dance floor.
Production wise, how did you go about putting the release together and who did what in the studio?
Actually, we created the entire track together from scratch, from brainstorming ideas to arranging the music. We collaborated on everything, including the chords programming and sound selection, to ensure it had the right feel. The only part I handled more solo was the mixdown. I spent extra time on it to find the perfect blend and make sure everything sounded just right.
Can you tell us about the vocal and what it means?
The vocal is all about celebrating life and having a good time. It’s uplifting and catchy, just like an island party should be! They really brought the track to life and fit perfectly with the overall vibe.
Did you face any challenges or obstacles in the writing or recording process?
The biggest challenge, was the vocals, We did a lot of research to find the perfect vocals for the track, experimenting with a lot of different options. After trying several samples, we found the ones that felt like they were made just for this production.
What was the main kit that you used on the release and did you get to work with any new instruments or kit in the process?
The main grand piano and other layers we used and fine-tuned are from the Hallion Sonic VST in Cubase Pro. For the synths and basslines, we went with sounds from Spire and Serum. These tools really helped shape the track’s vibe.
And what’s your favourite piece of studio kit that defines your sound?
We did a lot of tweaking with Spire and Serum. These two instruments have everything you need to get the perfect sounds for our tracks.
How has the release been going down in your DJ sets?
It’s just amazing—really brings that feel-good vibe!
Who are your top Afro Tech producers at the moment?
It’s tough to choose because there are so many talented Afro house producers. If we had to name a few, we’d highlight RBOR & Joezi, Sanio & Zarth, Francis Mercier, and Black Coffee.
What else are you working on at the moment that you can tell us about?
We’re wrapping up our next track, and it’s brimming with that same energetic, feel-good vibe you love. We’re set to release it by September, and we can’t wait for you to hear it. Stay tuned for more, it’s going to be worth the wait!
