Bestival Antics Galore at Common People

The countdown clock is ticking, and there are now less than two weeks to go until we take over Southampton Common for the first ever Common People on Bank Holiday 23rd & 24th May. With headline sets from Fatboy Slim and Grace Jones, plus Clean Bandit, Years & Years, De La Soul, Derrick Carter, Husky and many, many more, the weekend’s music is well and truly taken care of. So now CPHQ is abuzz with plans to bring a little taste of our legendary madness and mayhem to the mainland. Showcasing the fun and theatre of Bestival, be prepared to get involved in some off the wall antics.
 
Rob da Bank says: “Antics should be my middle name! I love festivals mainly for music, but after that it’s all about high jinks, fun and games and… well, antics! When we launched we didn’t wanna be the same as everyone else and we have carved out a niche not just for being the ultimate playground for kids of all ages but also a leftfield, experimental and experiential space where yarnbombing and a knitting tent nestle up to Morris Dancers, vintage fairground rides and beautiful artwork made specifically onsite for the festival. Not long to go now… See you there”.
 
We don’t normally skip to the end because there’s so much amazing stuff to see and do when we put on a party, but everyone loves the fireworks, and if you know anything about the Bestival crew, it’s that we do good fireworks. So, hold onto your hats, because when it comes to our Fireworks Finale, you’re not gonna be disappointed. Kicking off straight after the main stage headliner each night, we guarantee that Southampton common will come alive with iridescent brilliance and coruscating finesse, and, of course, all the traditional ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’!
 
With some fantastic walkabout treats and even more music, don’t forget to keep an eye out for some authentically uncommon goings on while you’re wandering the festival site. There will be a host of diverting attractions adding to the atmosphere, including Southsea Alternative Choir, an octet of harmonious minstrels belting out the greatest songs ever written, and they want you to join in too. Plus there will be Hampshire theatre company Albatross Productions, who will be performing family-friendly street pieces with a twist, and to cap it all off in finest style, we’ll have impromptu busking action from Southampton’s own Sea Slugs.
 
Bringing a special bit of Camp Bestival joy to proceedings we’ve got some fantastic family fun lined up for you and yours, too, including the Bigtopmania Circus. Always a huge hit with the crowds the Bigtopmania crew will be keeping everyone on their toes with the Big Foot the Clown Show, Dr Palfi & Minnie Clown Show, Noisy Oyster Puppet Company – ‘Dangerous Dave’, Big Bears Big Balloon Disco, Big Bubble Bash, Trapeze Lessons, a Fire Show, Circus Skills, Crazy Inflatable Bundle Madness! and Face Painting. Plus we’ll have a fantastic Toddlers Play Area, Craft Tents, Jan’s Blackboard Van and Hair Braiding, too.
 
And that’s not all, we’ll have the acclaimed and dynamic Nuffield Youth Theatre who work with professional theatre makers to create thrilling and inspiring work. Performing an adaptation of Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials novels, they will be showcasing some epic moments from the play across the Common People site! Look out for rampaging polar bears as you make your way around!
 
Helping take all of us Common People on a journey of the mind and soul, The People’s Front Room is styled as a psychedelic 19th Century Salon that dissolves the boundaries between performer and audience – you have been warned. And don’t put these needles on the record, instead stir your seditious soul and help brighten the world using wool-based guerrilla action, with crafty Knitting and Yarnbombing by I Knit London. And, as a final but all-important sprinkling of Bestival essence, we’ll have a little bit of Morris Dancing, a Big Wheel giving unparalleled views of the common, mad descents on our brilliant Helter Skelter, and an elegant array of eye-catching flags site-wide from Angus Watt.
