Broken Deck is the project of Michael Wright, a producer based in Walthamstow, east London. His debut EP under the moniker, ‘Finisher’, is a melting pot of crunching ambience, tangled melodies and rumbling low end. Drawing from a rich palette of shadowy electronics and saturated loops, each track skips and skitters, gathering energy and warmth before collapsing almost to the point of total decay. Its lopsided rhythms punch in all the right places, while its depth and warmth make it just as absorbing as a home-listening experience. The end product brings to mind the grit of Actress and patten, immersed in the hazy, washed-out tones akin to Boards of Canada—diverse in structure, rich in texture and startlingly fresh.
‘Finisher’ is the third release on Proclectic Records, and the distinction between Broken Deck and our other debuting artists encapsulates the ethos of the label.
