Canadian Producer and Singer Rico 56 Bares His Soul on Brooding Melodic House Ballad “You Run The World” on NIGHTMODE

Montreal-based Rico 56 is a producer and singer-songwriter who has been carving out his own lane within the house genre, driven by his distinctive vocal tone and moody sonics. Returning to NIGHTMODE comes his evocative new single “You Run The World.” The track marks his fifth release with the label in two years and arrives on the back of his recent single “Alone Again” alongside fellow label fixture, Alexis B.

“You Run The World” is a brooding house ballad that blends dark intrigue, melancholia, and an electric pull. Rico 56’s gripping vocal delivery anchors the track as he bares his soul, expressing the pain of being stuck under the thumb of a controlling partner. Love and sadness are intertwined lyrically and sonically as epic strings and dark sub-bass score the scene. Sparse percussion creates a smooth groove that provides momentum without overpowering the emotional edge. Breathy vocal bends create an anxious sense of uncertainty that builds and pumps through the drops enhancing the unsettling aesthetic. Controlling the energy with masterful skills, the track moves from pensive and stripped-back to intense bursts of self-realization, which, in turn, offers an impactful contrast.

Rico 56 has become a mainstay on NIGHTMODE with “You Run The World” continuing his hot-streak on the label over the past two years. He’s hot off the release of his collaborative effort “Alone Again” with Alexis B, which drew coverage from House Nest, Frontview Magazine, Find Your Sounds, Affinity Ascension, and The Dub Rebellion. His signature style has also become a favorite amongst tastemakers, having seen radio support from Alison Wonderland, Vintage Culture, Kiss FM UK, Illenium, David Guetta, Nicky Romero, Kyau & Albert, Benny Benassi, Gryffin, and Tiësto.

Part reflective ballad, part dance-floor-ready groove, “You Run The World” blurs the lines masterfully, finding a delicate balance of feels.

“‘You Run the World’ is about the feeling of being trapped by someone you love, incapable of freeing yourself, consistently moving in circles, all while they run the world. Thank you to NIGHTMODE for taking a chance on a song that is oh-so personal to me. I’m thankful to finally share this part of me with you guys—You run the world :).”—Rico 56
