Falco Benz - Confiturisme
After a series of stunning EP releases on the much coveted label Magnetron Music, Dutch DJ and producer Falco Benz has released his debut album, Confiturisme.
A debut that is as diverse as his tastes and influences, Confiturisme is 11 tracks of instantly gratifying synth melodies and heady basslines; revolving around analogue synthesizers, drum computers and step sequencers. These sonic creations can once be described as melancholic patterns and aggressive bass lines, and next as warm cheerful chords and disco-inspired beats.
Opening with the somber yet optimistic sounds of ‘Prespective’, Falco Benz paves the way for a largely instrumental album. Exhibiting a masterclass in blending sinuous synth melodies and staccato rhythms delicately intertwined with playful percussion, tracks such as ‘One On One Off’ and ‘After School Fool’ stand out as clear dancefloor cuts.
Honoring his credo “synths and songs make sense”, ‘Bottom Line’, ‘Like Today’ and ‘La Féline Mescaline’ all feature vocal collaborations that bring the emotive energy of the tracks to life. To continue creatively manifesting the reality, it’s fitting that ‘Like Today’ and ‘La Féline Mescaline’ were given visual texture through the release of two videos. The sepia hue and 90s aesthetic of ‘Like Today’ perfectly complements the track’s laid back, disco-infused and care-free vibes, whilst the Maxmana directed and Victor Moatti illustrated visual for ‘La Féline Mescaline’ that depicts a lush, tropical planet full of sensuality and mystery mirrors the hypnotic qualities of French Poet, Agnès Aokky’s voice.
Geometry, architecture and modernism have always been part of the visual language around Falco Benz. This is reflected in the artwork, as well as on stage where he’s often surrounded by screens showing synchronized geometrically shaped visuals. A formula that is still being refreshed with every new release and that has proven to work in many festival and club settings.
Before beginning his solo career in 2013, Falco Benz worked for many years as a keyboardist for artists including Benny Sings, Faberyayo and Kyteman. As an artist, his repertoire varies from instrumental synthesizer and sample based house to more vocal and poppy electronic tracks, alongside his remix work for renowned artists like Roísín Murphy, Oscar & The Wolf and The Flexican. His big break came when one of his singles ‘Hat Tricks’ via Magnetron Music found its way to Dutch national radio and became the song of the summer. Confiturisme can be seen as the culmination of these projects and experiences, and as Falco Benz puts it:
“Several months of cultivating, harvesting and ripening ingredients resulted in a fine selection of jams, carefully put together forming a melange that can best be described as Confiturisme.
