Slime welcomes back Urbani to the label with the stunning ‘Control’ EP.
The Croydon producer has quietly been crafting a unique style within the Garage blueprint for some time now, and each release on the imprint across the years has been a further extension of this work within the deeper end of the genre – but with his latest offering that development has generated a quantum leap forward with incredible results.
The lead track sees Urbani team up with New Orleans vocalist L8 for the sublime ‘So Much More’, a darkly seductive song that combines elements of Neo Soul, R&B, Electronica and Garage to mesmerizing effect. L8’s plaintive vocal delivery is the perfect companion for Urbani’s ethereal melodies, creating a melancholy atmosphere pinned down with pulsating bass for something truly refreshing.
This template is expanded further on ‘Tether’, which draws for a gargantuan descending bassline strapped to sweet female vocals and glittering FX, recalling the style of the first era of liquid Drum & Bass re-worked into a Garage format. Closing track ‘Higher’ drops down a gear for a more laconic take on the formulae, rolling at a half-step speed with cavernous bass stabs washing over string samples and foreboding chords, that reinforces Urbani’s stature as one of the most exciting producers operating in this space right now.
