The next release on Rinse is the anticipated Side FX EP from Denitia & Sene. A four-tracker of lustrous, nocturnal electronic soul and hip-hop, it captures the duo’s music at its smokiest, with hypnotic swirls of synth mingling with slow-percolating drum machines and the spiraling drift of Denitia’s vocals.
The Fan captures the duo in silken, driving pop mode deliciously teasing listeners with her haunting vocals and infectious chorus.
The title track is the pair’s most striking and progressive recording to date. Much acclaimed in the press ahead of its release, it’s muggy, wistful yet bursting with energy: a sonic portrait of a hot summer city night.
Based in Brooklyn, the duo of Denitia Odigie and Sene first met and started recording together in 2011, honing a dark, atmosphere-laden electronic soul hybrid sound that culminated initially on 2013 debut album His & Hers. The Side FX EP finds them further expanding upon and developing their sound – markedly more confident and powerful than their debut, yet simulataneously more wide-ranging and exploratory. ‘Because We Are Fools’ is a gorgeous, punch-drunk blur of synthetic colour that perfectly mirrors the song’s subject matter: “Why do we fall in love?” asks Denitia, her voice drowning in heat-shimmer synths. Finally, ‘Runnin’ drifts tantalisingly towards psychedelia, with its melancholy blasts of brass and vocoder lingering in the mind long after the EP’s end.Expect much more in the coming months.
