Today (Friday 4th April), Bristol-based DJ and producer Bakey, one of the rising talents in UK bass music, is kicking off 2025 with his highly anticipated EP, ‘Backrooms’. His debut EP release on Warehouse Project Records, this three-track project is a thrilling exploration of garage, breakbeat, and dark, minimalist soundscapes, showcasing Bakey’s ability to blend nostalgic UK rave influences with a fresh, forward-thinking approach.
Speaking on the creation of the EP, Bakey says:
“I wanted to do some proper club tracks, the process of writing ‘Wouldn’t Believe’ felt more like writing a song, and I wanted to demonstrate the darker, more dubby and minimal side of my sound here.”
The ‘Backrooms’ EP is a masterclass in skippy, sub-heavy productions, packed with gritty basslines and haunting samples. The opening track, ‘Don’t Stop’, a collaboration with fellow Leeds-based producer and Brighter Days affiliate Felixcw, is a dark and sinister cut featuring a haunting, echoed sample and menacing synths that build into a gritty, whirling sub-heavy bassline, perfect for peak-time sets in sweaty underground raves. ‘Under Control’, a solo effort from Bakey, is a clean, garage-inspired production with a growling D&B-esque bassline and Jungle-type sampling, creating a fresh reimagining of his favourite sounds. The title track, ‘Backrooms’, is a minimalist, Burial-inspired production that delves into dark and sinister territories, with vibrant synth stabs and a warped sample binding the track together for an atmospheric journey that’s both haunting and hypnotic.
Having carved out a unique space in clubland, Bakey has become a defining voice in the scene, drawing on his reverence for soundsystem culture, pirate radio, and the rave movement. From commanding global stages at Boiler Room and Glastonbury to electrifying crowds at Outlook, Waterworks, Boomtown and Warehouse Project (as a resident no less), Bakey’s rise has been nothing short of meteoric. As the first artist signed to Warehouse Project Records and a debut album in the works, the 23 year old’s ascent continues with his 4-week residency at London’s iconic Phonox venue, taking over Fridays throughout April.
Bakey’s 2025 is shaping up to be packed with unmissable appearances, including his headline residency at Phonox, featuring a handpicked lineup of pioneers and future icons including Champion, Reek0, Dismantle, Zed Bias, and Breaka. Additional tour dates include performances at Bubble Love with Ross From Friends on 19th April, WHP Rotterdam on 2nd May, Love Saves The Day 2025 on 24th May, Baltic Weekender 2025 on 30th May, Parklife 2025 on 14th June, Gottwood Festival 2025 on 12th June, Outlook Origins 2025 on 24th July, and Waterworks 2025 on 13th September, to name a few.
Bakey’s rise as one of the most respected new names in bass music is built on a deep appreciation for soundsystem culture, pirate radio, and the rave movement. His sound weaves between the minimal drums and gritty low-end of dark garage and the glowing warmth of jazz-influenced percussive flows, creating a vision of bass music that pays its dues to the past while looking firmly to the future. Being crowned DJ Mag’s Breakthrough Artist of the Year in 2023, Bakery became the first signing to Warehouse Project Records in 2024, donning its first release ‘Wouldn’t Believe’ and earning spins from Radio 1 tastemakers Sian Eleri and Sarah Story to name a few.
