The connected label is run out of Brixton and Berlin by Stereo MCs and Terranova, and it is to the latter of those two hotbeds that they turn for their eighth release: Behind it is German artist Aaaron, and here he offers four fantastic tracks of fresh house and techno.
Aaaron has made a big impact in the last few years with some choice EPs on Defected’s DFTD label. Also working as Jan Georg, this artist has appeared before on the label as a remixer. He has had support from the likes of Tensnake and Jamie Jones as well as being licensed to Sven Vath’s Sound of the 16th Season back in 2016.
First up here is the excellently enticing and dark r&b tinged house vibes of ‘Entropy’ Feat Hazel & Carolina Melean. Succulent beats and gentle thunder claps are eventually joined by some soulful chords and loose tin-pot percussion. But what really finishes it off are the whispered vocals and dry hits, getting right under your skin and into your heart. The totally different ‘War Chant’ is less steamy and more unsettling, with sirens and brooding bass, bird calls and menacing synth lines all working you into a lather.
‘Yuggoth’ shows Aaaron has a wide range of studio skills as it draws you into a roomy deep house groove with cleverly treated vocals that pan left and right. Delicate little chords and well design perc add to the trip that gets more forceful as it goes on. Last but not least is the warehouse styled cut ‘Stomp’, with its pixel thin lead synths and tribal vocal chants all sure to leave their mark on any main room.
This is refreshingly inventive and well produced house music that offers truly original sounds and ideas.
