Wind Horse Records ventures to Morocco to uncover Kali G, a DJ and producer of much local renown as well as a history in the clubs of Ibiza and Spain (where he was a resident of Catedral Club Sevilla). With previous releases on Desertica Records, We Love, and Y Serious?, Kali G has joined the Wind Horse family with an impressive three track release. The Equinox EP confidently displays his tight deep house sound, sprinkled with what Kali G calls ‘spiritual waves’ and the occasional sample from traditional Moroccan music.
“Equinox” opens the release with a snappy and funky drum track, followed by a rhythmic cut-up vocal of unknown origin, exotic high pitched embellishments, and quick snatches of percussion. This one’s a definite mood setter. “Fire Dancer” follows with a more commanding low end and some distant chants to prepare the dance floor for the journey. The rhythm is insistent and pounding, giving the impression of a steadfast march to some sacred place. The EP closes with “Nadam”, a gentler and dubbier effort from Kali G that explores the stereo sphere with layers of pads, ethnic vocals, and bright melodies. This one builds nicely and emotionally, and showcases the distinctive elements in this promising producer’s toolkit. Kali G’s Equinox EP delivers deep house with a difference.
