SPD - Escalation
SPD returns to Slime for the first time since his ‘Myriad’ EP last year. For his next set he presents ‘Escalation’ and a further step forward for his genre-bending style that creates a compelling intersection between house, garage and dubstep.
‘MBA’ draws the listener in immediately with ethereal vocals and intricate flourishes of guitar before unfurling across a laconic house groove. Slowly it develops into a bass-heavy roller with no rush to get anywhere – and all the better for it. The tempo is raised slightly for title track ‘Escalation’, with chopped vocals and jazz-infused melodies adding to the narcotic haze of percussion and buzzing basslines. Ewan Partridge adds production chops to ‘Witton’, opening with a melancholy air that builds into an atmospheric bubbler. Closing track ‘Fairchild’ provides the deepest cut on the release with saccharine female vocals and plucked strings overlaying delicate percussion and soft bass pads.
