Back in 1999 a previously unheard of production duo called Black Legend cheekily sampled the vocals of a Barry White classic and the original bootleg of their track 'You See The Trouble With Me' was an instant hit, receiving massive support from Pete Tong on BBC Radio 1 and was arguably the biggest tune among big tunes in Ibiza that year, much to the US soul singer's irritation. To avoid a costly lawsuit, a second, authorised version was quickly recorded with Elroy Powell AKA Spoonface providing the vocals but Black Legend had already announced their arrival on a global stage; 'You See The Trouble With Me' was a Number 1 hit, selling more than 2 million copies, gaining Gold and Platinum Discs in the process.
Original co-member Enrico Ferrari has made way and Ciro Sasso has rekindled the Black Legend Project alone and it would appear he's lost none of the magic for producing big time tracks with cheeky samples.
The latest offering from Black Legend Project is the House monster 'Gather Round' which is out now on French label, Jango Music. Sampling Odyssey's 'Use It Up And Wear It Out' from 1980, Ciro stays true to the original in many ways, adding kicking drums and a floor-shaking bass line before filtering in the vocals to create what is sure to be another firm favourite in clubland and the latest in a long line of hits for this veteran of the scene.
'Gather Round' by Black Legend Project is out now on Jango Music.
