Please talk to us about your latest release <<Hey Mama>> and the inspiration behind it.
The release of Hey Mama is a big step in a new musical direction for me, and this new style is what I've been developing for over a year. What I love about Hey Mama is that the lyric has this old school vibe to it that talks about being in love in a way that reminded me of the Motown era, which I love. The whole song to me is about wanting to tell the entire world about this special person who you're falling in love with.
How is this track special compared to other tracks you’ve released throughout the career?
Well, it's not the typical progressive/melodic house, for one. And since that's basically all I released from 2011 to 2016, that alone is a big change for me. It's also the first song I put out with a major label (Sony Music), which is also a significant change.
How did you first start playing music?
I've always been into music since I was like 2. When other kids were playing with cars or action figures, I was banging on kid-drums and playing on kid-instruments. So that's how that all started, then I started messing around with production at like 13.
Born and raised in Stockholm, Hellbergs love for music started at the tender age of 3, when he first began his one-man-shows for his family on his imaginary guitar. By the age of 13 he was introduced to the world of electronic music. From that early discovery, he was hooked, music has played a huge part in his life ever since.
We chatted to him earlier this week…
You also have some vocals on the track, did you work together with the artist to compose the lyrics or was it more so all on your end? How does lyrics and your music come to play with one another?
So with Hey Mama, the vocal was written 100% by Mike Kintish, a writer that I have worked with on several songs. He had a vocalist come in to cut the demo, then sent it to me. The plan was always to replace the demo vocal with a more polished clean-cut version, but I ended up sticking with the demo vocal, it just has an awesome vibe to it in my opinion.
Are there any artists in particular you would love to collab with this year?
Definitely! My wishlist is pretty extensive, haha. Would love to work with big female voices, there's something about the female voice that just works for me with my productions.
For some of us who have yet to attend a show, what is a typical experience like?
So my shows usually contain a lot of energy, unexpected song choices, a really good time and sing-a-longs.
What’s next for Hellberg?
I have a remix I did for a friend of mine coming out soon which will be awesome, some awesome people involved in that song. As well as my second single, which will be coming out this summer!
