‘Hiatus’ is the debut EP from Povoa, the immersive new project from up-coming French musician and producer Jules Rosset. The EP was inspired by his time studying at the American School of Jazz and Modern Music in Paris, where he discovered a deep love for electronic music.
Opening track ‘Affe’ is an immersive dive into Povoa’s realm; the song is powered by a motorik thump, which Povoa states is “the sound of a train embarking on a long, surreal journey”. Lead single ‘Okopipi’ takes that feeling one step further: it’s a mesmeric house cut that thrillingly shifts in and out of focus. The track was inspired by the rare poison dart frog of the same name, with Povoa stating that he wanted the track to sound “liquid, tropical and menacing.”
‘Yel’ manages to weave psychedelic splashes of colour into a hypnotic groove, pushing the EP into yet another frontier. It’s a standout moment on the EP, showcasing Povoa’s explorative traits.
‘Bencana’ concludes the EP on a mysterious note, offering moments of both light and shade. “it feels like you’re on a boat in the middle of a big storm. It’s getting worse and worse until at one point there is clarity”. Once clarity is restored, you can reflect on the journey that Povoa has taken you on, one in which he has explored mood and texture via the dancefloor. It’s sharp statement of intent from a producer who is only just beginning to find his groove.
