French DJ and celebrated producer Tim Paris’ Marketing Music Records label was founded in 2005 and has been entirely dedicated to Tim’s music and crushes. The imprint has been quiet in recent times owing to the boss focussing on his own EPs and recent full-length album elsewhere, but now it is back and on the charge. Kicking off the new era is this superb EP from sibling duo Idioma.
Born and raised in a small French village, in a family of violin makers, the world was always a musical playground for these two brothers. What began as a blithe adventure between many different kind of instruments and synths in the early 90s, is today a unique mixture of profound knowledge, special sound and overwhelming lust for experiment and development. They debuted on this label in 2009 and now make a welcome return.
Written in the South of France, the original on the EP was penned almost a year ago. Say the pair, “We loved the idea of keeping a repetitive bass all along the track. We love the work of Arvo Pärt for example, who made some amazing tracks with simple and repetitive musical phrases, it makes you focus on the music and sometimes it’s good to be deeply concentrated on sounds or melodies.”
The approach worked because ‘Pandore’ is a captivating and mesmerising track with rooted, rubbery drums and a simple but seductive synth phrase repeated over and over in slightly different ways. A thin, glowing and celestial piano line adds more layers of intrigue and the whole thing hypnotises listeners for the duration.
The Tim Paris remix is a more lively and playful affair with disco drums, shooting space age synths and tons of razzle dazzle. It’s a robust analogue remix that perfectly surmises Paris’ current aesthetic.
Lastly, German Ruede Hagelstein of labels like Noir, Freude Am Tanzen and KenieMusik steps up with a subtle rework that adds a little more urgency and energy to the supple original.
Overall this is a fine way to kick start the next chapter in the Marketing Music story.
