Now up to release number seven, Hawaii’s foremost underground house label is starting to get rightfully recognised around the world. It started as an after-hours party and is now a go to house label, thanks to releases just like this excellent new one from IN.PHrequent AKA Phillip Charles and label boss Willis Haltom.
Phillip Charles has been producing, DJing and remixing for two decades now. He’s released on Bedrock and Sony, Ovum and and more besides and here he teams up with frequent partner Willis Haltom. Based in Honolulu, Willis is a DJ, club owner and music producer who continues to push quality dance music to the people and has been behind Asylum Confidential since 2008.
First up here is ‘Davvinccii Codes’, a deep and sonorously rich track with soft hi hats, swirling pads and deep, inviting beats all off set with a slightly nervy lead synth line that changes texture throughout. It’s one that takes you late into the night in some style. Next up, ‘Find A Place’ is another truly deep track, with paddy kicks, groaning, sparse synths and plenty of little alien sonic details that are leant atmosphere by a dark, filtered vocal.
Track three, ‘Freak You’, is a slow motion chugger with woody drums and hits, clipped vocal cries of “come on” and plenty of tripped out synths and weird textures. When dropped it will surely prove decent DJs can make people go wild even at these slower tempos. Lastly, ‘The Heads You Know’ is again a sub 120bpm groove with elastic, long legged drums, smeared synths and more otherworldly vocals bleeding in from above.
This is another EP of inventive, left of centre house that does familiar things in unfamiliar ways.
