Chuck Roberts - In The Beginning: The Remixes

Chuck Robert’s ‘In The Beginning’, one of the most influential vocals in the history of house music, is the inspiration behind the latest release on legendary Chicago based-label, TRAX Records. Five brand new remixes spanning the spectrums of dance music – plus the original acapella – will land on 14 October from some of the best new and established producers around. These include experimental house DJ / producer, Londy also known for his work in the underground Chicago footwork scene; avant-garde artist, Jorge; breaking deep-house producer, Lady Fingers; reputable Italian DJ / producer, Carmelo Carone; and fellow Italian production ace, Fabio Tosti. With the Londy remix leading the way with early tastemaker support from Matthew Hade (Billboard), Lenny Fontana, Joe Smooth, Mauro Ferrucci, DJ KCC, Jose Maria Ramon (Ibiza Global Radio) and more, this release showcases the TRAX Records ethos of signing and releasing music they love, irrespective of trends and genres, blurring the lines between classic and fresh electronic sounds. Co-founded by “Screamin” Rachael Cain in 1984, TRAX Records was a crucial outlet for early house music and the sound of TRAX has profoundly impacted dance music culture since. In 2015, Beatport named TRAX as the Most Influential Dance Music Label in the world, and Time Out listed its ‘20 Best House Tracks’, featuring no less than four TRAX releases, including Frankie Knuckles' seminal masterpiece ‘Your Love’ and Adonis ‘No Way Back’. The TRAX Records legacy is plain to see but far from resting on its laurels, TRAX continues to seek out new music from original and exciting talent, with those involved in the latest Jack’s Groove release demonstrating this perfectly.

Experimental producer Londy is hailed by TRAX for his ability to produce across genres, such as drum ‘n’ bass, footwork and house. His innovative interpretation of ‘In The Beginning’ honours the widely recognised vocal “In the beginning there was Jack, and Jack had a groove”, borrowing elements of drum ‘n’ bass patterns as well as warm, chopped up loops, to create a unique house groove, with its roots in Chicago’s footwork scene. His past production has clocked up multiple Top 10 tracks across Beatport and Juno, support from the likes of LTJ Bukem, Grooverider and Kasper, and airplay on BBC Radio 1, BBC Radio 1Xtra, NTS and Rinse FM. His skills as a filmmaker have seem him direct ‘Footwurk: The Legacy’ a short film exploring the footwork genre’s positive impact on Chicago’s impoverished communities.

Next up on the remix is former TRAX Records Creative Director, Jorge, known for his WeAre18 project and producing for the likes of Todd Terry, Little Boots and Joe Smooth.  His ‘Black Dallas Roses’ remix of ‘In The Beginning’ is by far the most radical of the package; with industrial beats a warped groove and slowed down vocal, creating a deliberately abstract and high impact remix.

Breaking house producer Lady Fingers, steps up to deliver a more minimal offering from her regular deep house production with a ‘Chopp’n Salad’ remix. Taking a creative approach to the classic vocal, she chops and loops it to create a central, bouncing groove for her remix. Her credits include releasing on Activ-Analog and Friends With Benefits, plus remixing and collaborating with the likes of Sir Stephen (100% Silk) and Merwyn Sanders of Virgo (TRAX).

Carmelo Carone boasts an impressive 20 years playing on the coolest dancefloors around the world, and releasing on top labels like Henry Street Music, Karmic Power Records and of course, TRAX to name only a few. Carmelo’s ‘Fammi Sentire’ mix delivers a deeper, edgier mix, a progressive groove tinged with acid flavours. The dark synth stabs and acid lead line are designed to move the dance floor, while a low strings section delivers plenty of atmosphere.

Completing this versatile package is Italian house music royalty, Fabio Tosti, an artist with a long history releasing on prestigious labels such as Salted Music, Purple Music, Soundmen On Wax and more. As one half of TnT Inc. with Francesco Tarantini, he collaborated with Alex Dimitri to release ‘Jingo’, spending an impressive 4 weeks at #1 of the Traxsource download chart. Fabio’s ‘Crunch’ remix of ‘In The Beginning’ is primed for the dancefloor, weaving Chuck Roberts’ vocal “This is my house” throughout, with sampled crowd noises added for ultimate dancefloor ambience.

Historically, ‘In The Beginning’ by Chuck Roberts influenced the trajectory of the house music movement and has gone on to be one of the most used samples in dance music, most famously on Larry Heard a.k.a Mr Fingers' seminal track, 'Can You Feel It’ in 1987. To continue this legacy, TRAX Records are not only releasing the first-ever batch of official remixes, but also releasing the acapella for tomorrow’s producers and DJs to keep the tradition alive.

There is something for DJs and musos of many persuasions on this release, delivered by a handpicked group of the best new and established producers around. With sounds spanning the many spectrums of dance music; cutting-edge, deconstructive, and classic, expect to hear one of these on a dancefloor nearby, soon.
