Interview: Nausica discusses her latest club banger Stupid Disco

Nausica kicks off 2024 on Toolroom Trax with her signature sound of Latin Tech in ‘Stupid Disco’.

An artist that undoubtedly broke through in a major way in 2023 with debuts on Toolroom, Moon Harbour and Material that saw mass support from some of the underground’s hottest players such as John Summit, Mau P, Solardo, MK, Francisco Allendes, Danny Howard on BBC R1 and many more.

Toolroom is excited to work with Nausica again this year who without doubt is going to be a standout one to watch this 2024.

Hi Nausica! Thanks for talking to us, how are you doing?

Hi, nice to meet you. I’m really happy to have this chat with you. I’m starting this new year with you and Toolroom so I’d say the expectations for 2024 are FANTASTIC.

As we’re right at the start of the year, did you make any resolutions you could share with us?

2023 has been a really difficult year for me. It helped me understand that I am strong, that I have to trust my instincts and that happiness is made up of moments and that anger is useful but then you have to find yourself again. My salvation was Music, and the rewards were great. Today, despite the huge loss I had in my family, summing up I can scream out loud that I am nothing like what I went through, that I have fought 1000 battles and I am still standing, I have cried 1000 tears but I still smile. in 2024 I will laugh out loud, live without fear, love without doubt and continue to create Music which has been my only medicine.

Take us through a day in your life, from a possible morning routine through to your production work and otherwise, please.

I wake up early in the morning because I work on my family’s farm and take care of the well-being of all the animals. I madly love being in contact with Nature, it allows me to listen to myself and find the right inspiration for my tracks. I spend the afternoon in my studio at home listening to new music and creating new projects. I live with a Pomeranian puppy that I love madly and that fills my long days spent in front of the PC. I am a vegetarian, and I love eating everything my Earth produces. I’m a girl who sings at the top of her lungs in the shower, while I’m out in the pasture, while I’m cooking… In short, music is an indispensable equation for me. What would the world be without music?

Having topped the charts and received support from major international DJs, what do you believe sets your music apart in the competitive electronic music scene?

There is a lot of good music in the world. And I’m only at the beginning. My luck was TOOLROOM. The first real big to believe in me and my ideas. They accompanied me on a path that helped me believe in myself and my ideas. The goals achieved came with perseverance and hard work. I believe that the essential difference is my musical background. My long apprenticeship led me to make mistakes many times, but thanks to these mistakes today I am NAUSICA.

With your significant experience in both production and DJing since 2010, what changes have you observed in the tech-house genre, and how do you adapt your music to stay ahead?

There are so many changes. But I try to make music that everyone needs today. Currently the tech-house scene has moved into Latin-tech, but they are fads and as such they don’t last forever. When I work on a new Track, I always start with an interesting voice, and develop a Project from there. Today it seems, producing good music is not the priority. You need to have large numbers on social media, create content, have the right look and much more. When I started, all I needed was passion and hard work. Unfortunately today mine is no longer a MERITOCRATIC world.

Your new single Stupid Disco is out now on Toolroom Trax – was there any specific inspiration for this track?

No particular inspiration. I wanted to create a great yet simple track. The track everyone needs. The one that should never be missing from the flash drive because it is very useful if necessary. It really is as stupid as the title. Simple, powerful and effective. On the track it really is an atomic bomb.

Are there any bits of hard/software that were instrumental in producing this one?

I use Logic Pro for all my Productions. In Stupid Disco, the drums used are a Sample, the Vocals come from Splice. The difference this time is made by the bass and the synth that I created with Serum. It was so much fun making these 2 very powerful sounds.

What’s a book you’ve read or film you watched that has left an impact on you, and why?

I just finished reading “The Dirty Deal and the Silence”. Book based on the Mafia State Negotiation. It tells of one of the most dramatic and sensational events in the history of the Italian Republic. It represents the most complete reading of a story that many would like to be removed from the news and history of my country. The attacks in Lima, Falcone, Borsellino, the bombs in Milan, Florence, Rome, the State on its knees, its best men sacrificed . Yet at that same moment, while the blood of the massacres was flowing, there were those who, in the name of the State, dialogued with the Mafia. I recommend it to all Italians and also to others, why not, at least they get a real idea of what Italy is.

Apart from music, what makes you happiest?

Aside from Music, the only thing that keeps me alive are my animals. Each of them manages to give me something special that fills my heart. I madly love my 4 Maremma Shepherds who accompany me every morning to graze the sheep. My beloved lambs (not destined for slaughter), my stubborn and mischievous goats. And then there’s my little Ollie, my Pomeranian shadow. My day is dedicated to them and to Music.

What can we expect from you in 2024?

Lots of good music and good vibes. It’s the year of my rebirth. I am ready to seize all good opportunities. I hope to leave an indelible mark on the Tech-House scene also in 2024 which gets off to a flying start thanks to Toolroom Trax. See you in the world. I wait for you. I’m counting on it.
