Electronic music extraordinaire Kasbo continues to build anticipation for his upcoming album with new single ‘This Is It’ featuring Swedish singer-songwriter Frida Sundemo, out on March 20th.
The third single on his album release trail, after last month’s acclaimed double single ‘Drift’ and ‘Atlantis’ featuring Shallou and Swedish singer BJOERN, ‘This Is It’ provides another glimpse of Kasbo’s much-anticipated LP, combining Frida Sundemo’s sweet, reverb-soaked vocals with a cascade of synth melodies.
‘This Is It’ continues the fruitful collaborative partnership between Kasbo and Frida, who have worked together on every Kasbo album to date, first on ‘Over You’ from 2018’s Places We Don’t Know, and then on ’Shut The World Out’, a highlight from 2020’s The Making of a Paracosm.
Speaking on the record, Kasbo mentions “Me and Frida have been working together for years and she’s always been one of my favorite singers. I wrote to her about making something new together and sent over a few instrumentals. For one of them she wrote the vocal idea for “This is it”. As always with her there was just so much emotion and presence that I felt I wanted to produce something new for it specifically to do her vocals justice. We wanted to channel the feeling of realizing you’re like “right where you’re supposed to be”. Letting go of wants and needs and feeling content with where you are right now.”
Following his second album The Making of a Paracosm, released four years ago on ODESZA’s Foreign Family Collective and Counter Records, Kasbo now returns with his anticipated third record, The Learning of Urgency, out June 7th.
Kasbo recorded The Learning of Urgency largely while living in Gothenburg and Stockholm. He had the opportunity to record the majority of the upcoming album at Stockholm’s Arresten, a serene and unique former jail-transformed-studio, owned by ABBA’s Benny Anderson and located on the island of Skeppsholmen.
For Kasbo, The Learning Of Urgency is an extremely important concept. The songwriting orbits around slowing down, as the past few years of his life have been ridden with a sense of acute pressure, manifesting into a subconscious compulsion to constantly achieve and do more. The result nearly cost him his career, as he developed rare, stress-related hearing loss. The natural slowdown of the pandemic put these stressors into perspective, and through addressing them, he was able to get back on track, personally and professionally, and write this new album.
Kasbo, born Carl Garsbo, has established himself as a sensation across electronic music with his transformative, emotional sound. Ever a creative mind, for Kasbo, the past years of isolation were quick to transform into an era of curiosity and introspection. Time spent away from tour and at home in Sweden prompted him to turn to what he knew best – music. He found solace in honing in on his DJing while at home and sharing music with his friends, bonding over nostalgic memories and music that encouraged them to keep it moving, even during this time spent away from the dancefloor. He revelled in the minimal subtlety of euphoric club music, became infatuated with hypnotic trip hop from the likes of Moby and Massive Attack, and explored the ambient melodies of the likes of Rival Consoles, Max Cooper, and Olafur Arnalds. Months spent away from touring the world transformed into an invaluable period of deep diving into a newfound realm of music.
Kasbo’s music has received over 500M combined streams to date. He’s been awarded Sweden’s P3 Gold Award for ‘Dance Artist of the Year’ and has received praise from Billboard, The FADER, Stereogum, and more. With an increasingly expanding skill set, Kasbo has reached the trifecta of modern dance music as a live performer, a DJ, and a producer.
Frida Sundemo’s playful pop music sounds light and approachable, but derives from a dark and complex reality. In the fall of 2017 she released her international debut album Flashbacks & Futures. With soundscapes like a sparkling music bomb with rapidly pulsating bass drum the track was combined by inspiration from composers like Chopin, Hans Zimmer and John Williams to club acts such as Boys Noize and Para One. The album’s dewy production and expansive synths have garnered praise from the likes of Paste Magazine, FADER, The Line of Best Fit, Idolator, Clash Music, Billboard and more.
