Late Again’s latest single, ‘Caterpillars’, is a masterful blend of indie pop, electronica, and lo-fi, offering listeners a melancholic yet immersive experience that resonates long after the final note fades. This track is more than just a song—it’s a narrative deeply intertwined with Late Again’s own life experiences.
The inspiration for ‘Caterpillars’ comes from an unexpected source: the relentless construction noise that filled the air around Late Again’s apartment. After an entire block was demolished to make way for a towering skyscraper, the ensuing noise became an unwelcome soundtrack to his nights. One particularly noisy evening, he decided to turn this cacophony into art, capturing the sounds with a microphone pointed out of his window. The rhythmic pounding of a pile driver became the heartbeat of ‘Caterpillars’, infusing the track with a raw, organic pulse that perfectly complements its hypnotic, psychedelic trip-hop elements.
The song itself tells a poignant story of a person attempting to find peace amidst the chaos of gentrification, while also confronting the uncomfortable reality of being part of that very change. The aggressive construction beat, juxtaposed with a melodic and mesmerizing arrangement, creates a powerful contrast that captures the tension of this internal and external struggle.
Accompanying the single is an equally compelling music video, a testament to the power of creative collaboration. Directed by Gui Bohn and Nina Torres, the video was produced by the acclaimed production company Landia, with contributions from Evil Twin (audio), Marla (color grading), and Globetrotters (VFX). The ambitious project, a year in the making, reflects the deep bonds between the creative team, resulting in a visual experience as captivating as the song itself.
Late Again’s music is a rich tapestry of sounds, shaped by his artistic journey across various cities and his collaborations with a wide range of artists—from Grammy winners to underground grunge musicians. This journey, along with his Brazilian roots, deeply influences the unique sound of Late Again, blending Brooklyn’s vibrant indie, electronic, and lo-fi pop rhythms with the captivating melodies of his heritage.
Absolutely Almost Sure, his forthcoming EP, builds on the foundation of his previous release, Migraine Fever Dream, while exploring a more energetic and polished sound. Drawing inspiration from artists like Mac DeMarco, Gorillaz, and Caetano Veloso, Late Again continues to carve out a unique space in the music world, creating a sound that is modern yet timeless, and unmistakably his own.
