Innerflight Music keeps the flag flying for northwest techno with this new release from the prolific Kris Moon, a soldier of the Seattle electronic scene now stationed in Missoula, Montana. Kris has had his hand in many of Seattle’s dance music institutions, including helping to found the Decibel Festival, as buyer for the renowned Zion’s Gate record shop, and host of the influential Moon Bass radio show (which he started in 1996 and now continues in Montana). Kris Moon also helped found the globally recognized ‘Laptop Battle’, a competition series where electronic musicians face off, armed with a laptop and (sometimes) a MIDI-controller. Kris’s skill enabled him to win two of the competitions himself.
Kris’s debut release on Innerflight is the Late Night Tracks EP, an outstanding three-tracker that exhibits an ear for moody, layered soundscapes and attention to sonic detail. The lead cut, “Club in Chicago”, opens things nicely with a slinky, lowdown groove, accented by a processed repeating vocal scat, a jazz-infected bass line, and some sharp synth work. This one would certainly not be out of place in the Windy City’s after-hours environs. “Midnight Hour” follows, containing some solid peak-time dynamics; a bass heavy rhythm section anchors the club-ready female vocal hook as the tune twists and turns through its well-constructed breakdown sections. Rounding out the EP is “Last Party”, a more straight-forward track – in a good way – that’s comprised of ringing chords, funky drum beats, a pulsing bass line, and its fair share of ‘house party’ attitude. Kris Moon’s Late Night Tracks EP gives DJs some prime dance floor fuel … vibes galore.
