The remix of ‘drifting’ – now at over 4.9M streams – follows Night Tapes’ serene and hypnotic dream pop EP, ‘assisted memories’, released in June
Laurence Guy delivers a Summer-ready remix of Night Tapes’ dreamy single, ‘drifting’, out on 26th July via Nettwerk Music Group. It’s the follow-up to the trio’s recent June-released EP, ‘assisted memories’.
UK producer Laurence Guy’s remix takes the reverb-drenched atmospheric dream pop track to new heights. While the original has an indie-dance-style groove, Laurence Guy goes further into the dance with a driving drum pattern reflecting his signature filter house-inspired sound. This version is stripped back but effective, taking a keen focus on lead singer Iiris Vesik’s vocals, chopping and looping to create a hypnotic groove.
‘drifting’ is taken from Night Tapes’ much-anticipated ‘assisted memories’ EP, released on 7th June. Each of its seven tracks is draped in lo-fi distortion, oozing drowsiness. The release showcases their sonically soothing style, ranging from the laid-back and balmy ‘easy time to be alive’, to the ethereal, upbeat disco-esque ‘projections’, and the more psychedelic indie-rock-influenced ‘loner’.
Thematically, this EP, their fourth to date, is about “honouring and recalling the various versions of ourselves,” explains Iiris Vesik. “Each song captures moments in time through analogue and digital recordings, reflecting personal growth and change. The lyrics emotionally organise these insights, acknowledging our human tendency to forget. By documenting our histories, we shape our narratives and take responsibility for our realities.”
Laurence Guy, a producer and musician who, in his own words, makes “music to make you feel feelings”, has had a whirlwind few years. Following a string of releases in 2023 on Shall Not Fade, and collaborative EPs with Miller Blue and Barry Can’t Swim, his huge third album, the diverse 17-track ‘Living Like There’s No Tomorrow, But Killing Yourself In The Process’, saw Guy show off his range of abilities, dropping jazz alongside hip-hop, soul and house, packed with live instrumentation and his own vocals.
Bursting onto the scene in 2017 with his critically acclaimed debut LP, ‘Saw You For The First Time’ (lead track ‘SYFTFT’ has 23.5M+ Spotify streams), London-based Laurence Guy has gained a reputation as a talented producer of jazz and hip-hop-influenced, sample-heavy filter house music. A prolific producer, his releases on Future Classic, Studio Barnhus, Ninja Tune, Shall Not Fade and Church have amassed over 60M overall streams.
2024 is poised to be the biggest year yet for Night Tapes, with their Spotify following growing by over 50% to nearly 30k, nearly three million streams for their late 2023 single ‘drifting,’ support from BBC Radio 1, and monthly listeners peaking at over half a million with 1.7 million streams.
Night Tapes began as evening jams between housemates Max Doohan, Sam Richards, and Iiris Vesik in London. They released a run of popular singles from 2019, including the wavey ‘Humans’ (Over 3M Spotify streams) and ‘Forever’ (over 8M Spotify streams). ‘assisted memories’ is the band’s fourth EP, following ‘Dream Forever In Glorious Stereo,’ ‘Download Spirit,’ and ‘Perfect Kindness,’ which was acclaimed upon its release in the summer of 2023. Their debut single ‘Forever’ has reached over eight million plays, and their music has been championed by Turtlenek, Paste Magazine, Pigeons & Planes, DUMMY Magazine, At The Barrier, David Dean Burkhart, and Majestic Casual channels.
Night Tapes are taking their incredible ‘assisted memories’ EP out on the road later this year, playing throughout the UK in September, LA, Chicago, New York and San Francisco in November and supporting L’Impératrice in Atlanta, Washington, Philadelphia, New York, Montreal, Toronto and Chicago in January.
This remix from Laurence Guy compliments the trio’s characteristic hazy sound with a version perfect for a sunset house rave. A match made in heaven, be sure to play this one loud as the summer months begin to dwindle.
