Little Boots – Heroine / Pretty Tough

With the imminent “Business Pleasure” EP, Little Boots rewrites the rules of the pop book once more, seizing control of the reins and travelling further down her own unique path. The infectious tunes and beats are still intact of course, but now Victoria Hesketh has joined forces with esteemed leftfield producers such as Com Truise, Peter Wade and Simian Mobile Disco’s Jas Shaw to create something entirely in a league of its own.

“Taste It”, the lead track from the EP, set out the stall perfectly, with Little Boots’ glacial vocals set against minimalist beats to unsettling yet addictive effect. Meanwhile, new track “Heroine” (which premiered on Guardian last week) imbues the electronic landscape with a sense of elegant melancholia, and on the menacing “Pretty Tough” (which premiered on Spin) she takes on the naysayers with the righteous warning “You think I’m pretty, oh well, I can be pretty tough”. It’s just another intriguing glimpse at the off-kilter world that Hesketh is constructing for herself, and reason why the reinvention of Little Boots is certainly one worth getting excited about.
