Lovechilde are London-based multi-instrumentalist Thomas Eliot Dodd and producer James Dashwood. Their first full-length album Doorway to the Cesspit is released September 1st via Childe Records. A dense yet wildly creative listen, Doorway to the Cesspit’s is as unsettling as it is explorative, with its gaze fixed squarely on reinvention.
Produced by Lovechilde and Misha Herring (with drums from Virginia Wing’s Sebastian Truskolasky) the album mirrors its abrasion with intuitive instrumentation and a forward-thinking approach to songcraft. Made without thought to traditional genre convention, Lovechilde’s music touches on elements of krautrock, leftfield electronica, drone and shoegaze.
The tracks on Doorway to the Cesspit’s thematic underpinnings focus on both the real and the surreal; from millennial ennui and urban isolation, through to the occult and 21st century witchcraft.
While Eliot’s vocals switch from Nick Cave-esque monotone to frantic shouts, distorted synths swell over delayed guitars. Opening with the caustic ‘Ergot on Rye’, the album seems to be placed firmly in the shadows, however lightness is teased throughout; no more obviously than in the sinister lounge of ‘Grease’ which is answered back with the sonic assault of ‘Vile Jelly’.
A truly inspired record, Doorway to the Cesspit is released September 1st.
