Lucy Lane Embarks On A Dark-Pop Musical Fantasy With Latest Release: ‘I Don’t Want To Be Angry’

Bursting onto the music scene with her distinctive sound and direct lyrics, Lucy Lane defies expectations and challenges societal norms with her latest single, ‘I Don’t Want To Be Angry.’

Lucy Lane’s newest track showcases her fearless approach to exploring difficult themes of anger and resentment, whilst executing a sleek production style and artistic vision. Drawing inspiration from unapologetic pop, classic rock, and euphoric electronic music, Lucy Lane’s music defies genre boundaries. Her anthemic lyrics and catchy melodies create a tension between classic arrangements and contemporary themes, resulting in a unique and captivating sound.

‘I Don’t Want To Be Angry’ is a dark, dramatic, and haunting track that delves into the complexities of anger. It was born out of a conversation about the horrifying realities of gender-based violence as well as personal experiences of emotional violence that have shaped much of her songwriting. The track’s ethereal synth pad, pounding drums, and poignant lyrics combine to create a spell-like quality, an anthem for releasing anger and seeking justice. Lucy Lane’s creative process involved collaboration with her producer, Mint Sauce, and guitarist Eric Matern, who contributed to the apocalyptic and dramatic elements of the track. The original style of mixing and mastering by Jackson Hoffman added a St. Vincent or Karen O finish to a powerful sonic experience.

“Anger is one of the most important emotions in the human experience. It’s primitive and protective. It shapes our moral compass and sparks change. It’s not the emotion that’s the problem, but the way we express it. I was angry about everything from structural violence to a guy who wasn’t texting me back when I wrote it. So I think everyone can relate to it – because anger is a universal experience. But in our society, we’ve been taught to suppress it – especially women. This song is about honouring it, as part of healthy anger expression. ‘Love is the default, hate is a knife, anger is pure if you use it with light.’ When you learn to control it, instead of letting it control you, it becomes pure, even divine.” – Lucy Lane

Promoting ‘I Don’t Want To Be Angry’, Lucy Lane has planned the release of a music video that visually complements the dark and atmospheric mood of the track – slated for release on the 14th July 2023. The music video was directed by breakout London-based filmmaker Kassandra Powell, who was nominated at the Berlin Music Awards 2023 for her work with Tayce on Swagzilla. The duo collaborated on the concept after Lucy initially took the idea of a dramatic haircutting scene, while wearing her mother’s wedding dress, to Kassandra and production company Camp – whose clients include Ann Marie, Little Mix, Laura Mvula and more. With references ranging from Joan of Arc to Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo and Juliet, the video moves through three abstract, minimalist scenes bringing to life a dark fairytale of a girl whose anger grows in her hair. It will debut on 14th July and is the first of two videos Lucy and Kassandra have worked on together. 

 

Lucy Lane has recently announced her support appearance for talented musician, Tally Spear, on July 19th 2023. Located at Paper Dress Vintage in London, the night plans to screen the ’I Don’t Want To Be Angry’ music video, promising to be a remarkable showcase of female talent in the music industry; Organised by Generation W, is dedicated to celebrating women in alternative pop and alternative rock genres.
