Maison Sky – Ludes
Since the release of their debut EP through Rinse last year, rising UK house duo Maison Sky have been busy. Their remix of Route 94′s hit ‘My Love’ has been a regular fixture in clubs and on the radio, they’ve played a headline slot at 02:31′s Fabric takeover, and recently recorded a guest mix for Skream’s BBC Radio 1 show. Now they return to Rinse with their follow-up EP, which draws together four of the duo’s immaculately crafted, deeply funky takes on house and techno. On It Is What It Is they both broaden their palette and hone its impact, for a series of tracks drawing on the melodic flourishes of classic Detroit techno, rave and the hybrid approach of contemporary auteurs like Shed.
The title track puts a high-gloss, contemporary twist on a driving, classicist house backbone, with shades of Chez Damier folded into its brittle organ stabs and lush, swooning pads. A simmering mid-set track, it’s taut and mechanistic yet soft edged and distinctly organic in tone. ‘Ludes’ is warm-blooded machine soul, tinged with deep blue electric crackle and sunk deep into an undulating groove – crafted for plunges into the deepest of dancefloors. The steppers’ bounce of ‘ASND’ plays off a low-slung, sidewinding kickdrum groove against stiffer flourishes of melody, making for a strikingly energetic, bristling club track. Final track ‘Switch”s dubby chords wheel in joyful arcs around hefty, billowing low-end, ending the EP in a rush of warehouse rave atmosphere.
