Having already developed a radio presence and secured a number of high-profile gigs in her native country of Israel, singer-songwriter May Sebbag brings her latest single ‘Circle Me’ to an international audience.
Growing up in Tel Aviv with her father, an art collector and music addict, as well as her theatre CEO mother, May has been exposed to the arts for as long as she can remember. She excelled in performance throughout her childhood, beginning to sing at a very young age.
May cites her primary musical influences as Kate Bush and Tori Amos, and like her heroes she has a unique, instantly recognisable voice. Lyrically, she takes inspiration from her philosophical insight on her own experiences and literature.
‘Circle Me’ features heavy electronic kick drums and sparse instrumentation, leaving plenty of space for May’s vocals to shine through. Her backing vocals demonstrate a wide range throughout, frequently sitting very high and creating a ghostly atmosphere in a manner similar to Kate Bush.
In order to record ‘Circle Me’, May has turned to instrumentalist Gal Nissim, who is a fellow student of hers at Rimon Music School – one of Israel’s leading arts institutions.
Her training led to the release of three singles which received heavy rotational play on leading radio stations throughout Israel. In turn, May was asked to play the Maccabiah, known as the Jewish Olympics, as well as for the 90th birthday of Shimon Peres, former president of Israel.
With such staunch support in her home country, May’s songwriting has now found new strength on ‘Circle Me’ – she will certainly be one for international audiences to keep an eye out for.
