Midnight Perverts & Troncoso ft Ely La Inmunda – After Dinner Mint EP
Next up on Superfreq is the dynamic duo of Midnight Perverts & Troncoso with two brilliant originals that come with remixes by label boss Mr C, David Scuba and Noël Jackson.
Midnight Perverts aka Romeo Ugalde, Neil label boss and Bar Americas resident has been going strong under various aliases for a decade now, and his originals and remixes have been supported by the likes of tastemakers including Art Department and Seth Troxler, Silicone Soul and Maceo Plex. Here he teams up with Argentinian born but Miami based Troncoso, who is still only in his early twenties but has amassed a fine discography on labels like Get Physical, Nervous and many others. He runs his own labels Prisoner of Love and What Makes a Lover and is a regular in the best clubs around the world. “What I wanted to do with these tunes was to create something a bit different from my usual sound. ‘Quiero Olerte’ is very dark and ‘After Dinner Mint’ has this technoish funky style,” he says, and he’s not wrong.
Up first is ‘After Dinner Mint’ a deep and squelchy number, with mechanical drum grooves, funky little clipped riffs and a hiccuping percussive line. Sparkling melodies add colour and dazzle and there is a certain mischievous magic to the track with its alien lines and building sense of tension that will keep floors locked.
The first remix comes from boss man Mr C himself, He flips ‘After Dinner Mint’ into a tripped out, metallic track with coarse hits, psychedelic synths and a fat retro bassline that bobbles away invitingly underneath it all.
The ever impressive label stalwart and firing DJ that is David Scuba then flips the track into a shuffling, texturally rich affair with ditty, appreciated synths and undulating grooves. Some shooting laser synths add that all important sci-fi aspect and the result is a typically standout cut.
The final remix comes from Noël Jackson who goes all deep and weird on his version, where spangly lines spray about next to woodpecker like stabs, whispered vocals and mischievous nocturnal spirits. It;s infectious, tense and unique and rounds out a great package.
To close the package we have, ‘Quiero olerte entre las Piernas ft Ely la Inmundal’, it’s a tropical and humid track with nicely defined drums that tumble through space with haunting synth lines adding a mysterious air. Dark but inviting, it’s the sort of spooky and weirdly spiritual track that fits perfectly on this label.
Once again this Superfreq dream team have come up with the goods through another standout EP.
