Mike Dunn – Can I Turn It Up

The German Caus-N-ff-ct label delves into the archives for its next release and asks three musical heavyweights to remix a classic track from pioneering House producer Mike Dunn. Those heavyweights are Ibadan Records boss Jerome Sydenham, Berlin pair Vision Factory and Swedish talent Martin Brodin.

Mike Dunn has released countless seminal EPs under his own name as well as myriad aliases from Jass Mann to MD connection via I Phunky Brother. They have come on labels like Defected, Exploited and many more and this track ‘Can I Turn it Up’ from 1997 is one of his best.

First remixer Jerome Sydenham has a rich heritage in the house genre, not least thanks to the influence of his own label. His remix is a deep, dusty thing with feel good chords dangling above vintage beats. Vocal stabs and a real sense of swing ensure this one will become as classic as the original in no time.

Next up Vision Factory, aka Jeffrey Sawodny and Martin Sauer – a Berlin based house duo with releases on Kolombo’s LouLou Records and King Street’s sub label Street King – flip the track into a bouncy, percussive number with lots of height in the drums and soul in the synths. Building to a crescendo with some filtered vox and bold basslines, it’s a peak time cut that will get floors writhing as one.

Last but not least is house and disco don Martin Brodin, who runs MB Disco and Deeplay Music and never fails to craft classy tracks in his studio, his remix is a wild, party starting affair with fun cow bells, sweeping synths and pinging drums. Tons of great production techniques add drama and charisma to the track as it freewheels through arpeggiated synths and explosions of percussive colour.

These three remixers all do the greatness of the original proud and breath new life into it at the same time as offering up something fresh.
