Kirk Degiorgio - Mixed by Machine

Late September sees Kirk Degiorgio deliver ‘Mixed by Machine’, a compilation spin-off of the futurist Machine club nights the British electronic music legend runs alongside Ben Sims.
Established in London on a cold winter’s night in 2011, MACHINE was a club concept that, on the face of it, seemed quite obvious. Yet somehow, at the time, focussing solely on new music was a radical idea for a techno night because, for years, slavish replicas of age-old blueprints had dominated the nocturnal landscape. Dry, abstract minimal was enduringly popular, middle of the road tech house was an ever-swelling tide of diluted electronic pollutant and even well worn techno classics were beginning to sound tired.
Enter MACHINE: spearheaded by Sims and Degiorgio and with clearly drawn new battle lines, it was a night the scene needed to recalibrate itself and push on into the future. Both established producers and DJs equally at home in the studio or in the booth, the English tastemakers were initially brought together by a shared passion for new music, as well by the common collective ground of their funk, disco and electro collections. Without delay, suitable venues were sourced and a music policy was enforced – no record more than a year old would be played at any MACHINE event, be it in London, Berlin, Amsterdam, Paris or anywhere else around the world.

Carefully chosen guest DJs such as Luke Slater, Surgeon and DJ Rolando immediately embraced the challenge and helped ensure that MACHINE was up and running at full pelt from the word go. The strictly policed music policy soon brought about special atmospheres and a unique intensity unlike any other techno night in the country. Nothing was familiar. There were no warm-up DJs to ease you into the night, no classics to hang onto, no easing off until the lights came up and nothing but techno all night long.

And it worked… oh yes, did it work. With guests including Rødhåd, Robert Hood, Oscar Mulero, Rod, DVS1, Untold, Shifted, Sigha and many more besides, MACHINE is now well established as a pioneering night that allows you a glimpse into the future. From Berghain to Tresor in Berlin, Fabric to Corsica Studios in London and via events in Singapore, Bangkok, Barcelona, Madrid, Paris, Glasgow, Amsterdam, Rotterdam and many other designated techno cities, MACHINE has spread the word far and wide and will continue to do so well into the second half of this decade.

There can be no doubts, then, that MACHINE came about at just the right time: not since the early nineties has the scene had such an influx of young, aspiring producers and dancers, and without this fresh new blood pumping through its veins at 130bpm, MACHINE would not have been possible. To celebrate this little piece of modern techno history, Kirk Degiorgio has compiled MIXED BY MACHINE, there first in a new series of compilations that will highlight the very brightest stars of new school techno. Featuring 25 tracks from the likes of Ilian Tape’s Rupcy, Benjamin Damage from 50 Weapons, Raiz from Droid and cuts from exciting veterans like Joachim Spieth, Mark Broom and Ben himself, the compilation is a calling card for MACHINE parties, but also a battle cry for techno itself, proving that the genre can still incite shock and awe as ably as ever.
