New York’s J Gabriel launches the Onysia imprint this June with his ‘Sundrop’ EP, backed by a remix from minimal house favourite iO (Mulen).
Operating within the heart of New York’s bustling nightlife landscape, Joseph Alpern has been creating electronic music for well over a decade. His most recent work as J Gabriel rests upon a firm deep house foundation, while more left of centre ideas are explored under the pseudonym Chuffing Buffy. The launch of Onysia is a strong statement of intent and vision for meticulously crafted house music which exists simultaneously as functional club artillery and also contemplative home listening bliss.
Opening the EP is the deeply funky ‘Sunshine (This Time…)’ with a bright palette of playful filtered melodies atop a tight, infectious bassline which warms you up for the summer season. A stripped back and refined ‘Sundrop One’ explores a more abstract emotional space, and relies on rich chords, slick percussion licks and a heavy, engaging low end. Lastly, Kiev based DJ, producer and label owner iO (Mulen) steps up with his interpretation of “Sundrop One”, employing swinging percussion arrangements and woozy electronics across his thumping remix.
J Gabriel ‘Sundrop’ EP drops on Onysia on 14th June 2019 (Vinyl) / 1st August 2019 (Digital)
