Earlier this month, Clock Strikes 13 set off on a mission to explore the depths of the underground, presenting 24 special parties ran by 28 prestigious labels from worlds of grime, techno, bass, hip-hop, lo-fi and each crossover in between. Now a month deep into their reign, CS13 has hosted sell out London shows with Principe, Boxed X Local Action, plus gigs from international comrades 1080p, Smalltown Supertown, SUED and more. Ninja Tune I at St Johns of Hackney and Bok and Friends rounds off October nicely, whilst November sees heavyweight shows from XL Recordings, Hyperdub, Hospital Productions, Awful Records, 20/20 X Astral Black, Houndstooth and Planet Mu. Plus, next weekend Hyperdub will host footwork dance classes with legendary crew The Era.
For those stuck for Halloween plans, electronic pioneers Ninja Tune mark their 25th birthday with a show at 17th century church St John at Hackney. Some of Ninja’s most iconic artists join – dubby trio King Midas Sound and guest Fennesz, a rare set from elusive Dean Blunt, and the first ever show of Shackleton’s Powerplant project. For any left-field fans, this is not to be missed. On Saturday Night Slugs head honcho Bok Bok brings a NJ X UK massive to Village Underground for what promises to be a hi-energy, rowdy night. Expect basslines and sample-heavy sets from the man himself, plus NJ club kids Karizma, Total Freedom, and the queen UNIIQU3, plus London’s very own Sweyn Jupiter, who’s FADER mix for CS13 you can hear here.
Next weekend seminal London label XL Recordings storm Village Underground with a line up paying tribute to their recently revived chapter compilations, including Paul Woolford, Mumdance and Zomby. On Saturday, Hyperdub bring a solid gold lineup to Corsica studios for Kode9’s album launch. On top of that, infamous Chicago crew The Era (Litebulb & Chief Manny) give the UK a chance to learn footwork moves at Pineapple Dance Studios on Sat afternoon.
Other November escapades include Hospital Productions for all of London’s finest techno purveyors – with Prurient, Ninos Du Brasil and Ron Morelli, plus Atlanta’s hottest rap crew Awful Records bring an ATL flavour to London on the 14th with a show featuring their biggest and baddest talent. The second instalment of Ninja Tune’s birthday the weekend is a special at the ICA featuring the mystical Actress, aka Darren Cunningham. Then, 20/20 team up with the Astral Black boys for a killer night featuring sets from DJ Milktray, Ryan Hemsworth (live) Sega Bodega, Jon Phonix and more. Rounding the month off is Fabric’s Houndstooth label on the 27th, headlined by some of the labels emerging talent including 18+, Akkord and Source Direct, the Planet Mu is last but not least, now with footwork king RP Boo joining Kuedo, Ital Tek and many more.
With two big months left to go, December’s parties also have some serious new additions, with Legowelt joining Viewlexx on the 11th and Romare and Max Graef for the final Ninja Tune party. Comeme bossman Matias Aguayo will join his label comrades and the Highlife team for the final event in the series, plus, there are plenty of surprises still to come with dance classes, podcasts, parties and more still on the horizon.
