Like everything Niko Javan does, Pornicopia is a musical masterpiece disguised in tongue-and-cheek humor and witty irony. The music video and accompanying game, apparel and album art are a colorful “feast” for the eyes designed and created by Javan himself. They feature bumpin’ rides, twerking vixens and naked models all made out of fruit. The theme, according to Javan, is “not letting mass branding and advertising have too much influence on how you smash and how you eat…Smash/Love/Eat at your own rate.” The video in particular showcases the merging of fruits and sex.
While the artwork and visuals may lend the piece a lighthearted tone, the three-track EP is not joke. Heading the tracklist is “Karma”, a fast-paced whirlwind of a track featuring vocals by Michele Wylen. A rumbling beat sets a driving pace while delicate notes shimmer around the vocals in this fierce energy-builder.
Up next, the EP’s title track slows down the rhythm and opts for groove, taking things in a more indie-dance direction. Featuring Paper Water and Voila Snow, “Pornicopia” takes its time unraveling, drawing the listener in on a deliberate syncopated bass line and swinging melodies.
Lastly, “Take Your Time” wraps up the EP with Javan’s signature chill-step style. Slow, meandering and soulful, the tune rises and falls like the ebb and flow of the tide, swelling on melodies before collapsing and breaking down into deconstructed drops.
“Pornicopia is about unique self exploration and expression. Despite overwhelming influences around us that tell us how to be, it is important to learn that on your own. Established entities and corporations try to put specific ideas into millions of minds to “look this way, eat this way, love this way, f*ck this way. No company is looking out for you the way you look out for yourself, so trust yourself, your gut instinct, and dive in. Figure out what you like by personal experience.” -Niko Javan
