Mr Damage Control is back. Responsible for one of the labels iconic albums and countless catalogue classics including ‘Easy’, ‘Superman’ and ‘Rebound’, Mat Zo returns home to Anjunabeats with the ‘No Words’ EP.
One of the most innovative artists over the labels 18 years, Zo joined the Anjuna family at the age of 17. A series of revolutionary releases followed, rewriting the rulebook on trance sound design and groove. While the BPM decreased, there was a tenacity and energy to the likes of ‘Synapse Dynamics’ and ‘The Lost’ that felt timeless. As dance music was given a festival flavour, Mat was at the forefront with the likes of ‘Superman’ and ‘Rebound’ (alongside Arty).
2013 saw the release of his debut artist album ‘Damage Control’. A showcase for his eclectic songwriting and sampling skills, it received a Grammy nomination for Best Dance / Electronic Album that year, while his collaboration with Porter Robinson, ‘Easy’, hit the U.K. top 40.
In recent years Zo has pushed his avent-garde production skills to the max, including another critically acclaimed LP in ‘Self Assemble’, a return to his MRSA drum and bass alias, and nurturing the next generation of talent via his Mad Zoo imprint.
His return to Anjunabeats is yet another bold statement; 3 genre straddling tracks that bring together musical influences from around the world. A summer favourite from Above & Beyond’s DJ sets, ‘Meaning Lost All Words’ has the french house sensibility that has always featured in Zo’s work. ‘Says Without Going’ has hints of classic tech-trance, while ‘See It When I Believe It’ is yet another modern tongue in cheek twist on the trance formula.
Mat Zo ‘No Words’ EP is available to download and stream on Anjunabeats now.
