Following a packed summer of festivals — including Roskilde — drummer, rapper, and vocalist Øyunn drops ‘New Life’, a breakbeat banger that fuses laid-back spoken word rap with high-octane, rhythmically shifting beats.
The track opens and closes with an irresistible, hook-heavy chorus — a melodic earworm carried by vibrant grooves. Øyunn’s delivery is confident and playful, her rap cool and conversational, floating over a crisp, video game–tinged beat. The bass line stays light and groovy, while brilliant, insistent vocals cut through with clarity and emotion.
Behind the name Øyunn is Siv Øyunn Kjenstad, a diverse artist born in Norway but now based in Copenhagen. She released a live album ‘Aspects’ in 2023 which was originally a film, performance and concert created for Ultima Festival. The album led to Øyunn winning ‘New Jazz Name of the Year’ at the Danish Music Awards that year. She is also known for being the touring drummer for Danish indie legends Efterklang, as well as drumming for Bugge Wesseltoft, Nils Frahm & Guldimund.
Lyrically, ‘New Life’ explores the push-pull of a misfiring, non-romantic relationship — when communication breaks down but the longing to connect remains. It’s about hitting pause, pressing reset, and making space to actually live.
Super catchy with an edge, ‘New Life’ channels the energy of big-league rappers while staying unmistakably Øyunn: honest, unpredictable, and totally electrifying.
The single comes from Øyunn’s forthcoming debut studio album ‘I Know U Can Do It’ which she produced with Brian Batz and is scheduled for release on 31st October via Midnight Confessions.
