This summer marks the 30 year anniversary of Paul Oakenfold’s famed trip to the White Isle; a seminal week in music history that witnessed the birth of club and festival culture as we now know it, and the emergence of one of the greatest DJs of our time. As part of the Generations World tour across six continents, Paul Oakenfold has chosen to call Pikes his home in Ibiza, every Wednesday for 4 weeks from 2nd – 23rd August.
To celebrate this iconic journey and storied career of the man who shaped and elevated an entire genre, 3 x Grammy-nominated DJ Oakenfold will play extended sets spinning timeless records spanning three decades, with some very special DJ friends dropping in along the way to share the decks and another summer of love.
Oakenfold’s story famously starts in Ibiza, where he went with fellow London scenesters Danny Ramping, Nicky Holloway and Johnny Walker in the summer of 1987. They found Balearic music, infectious island spirit and a new lease of life. Taking a taste of Ibiza back to London, Oakenfold’s electronic label ‘Perfecto’ and club night ‘Spectrum’ started a dance music revolution. Youth culture became club culture, which led to raves, which led to the birth of electronic festivals. The electronic music community has come a long way in 30 years and with Generations, Oakenfold celebrates it with a spectacular set that only he can.
Paul Oakenfold said: “I'm beyond excited by doing this residency at Pikes. I'm doing a compilation of 30 years of electronic music, which will feature tracks from artists whose music has defined each era. It will show people not the obvious tracks but some of THE tracks of the genre. It's amazing because I'm usually playing massive shows so to go back and play a small room for 200 people and to play three-hour sets is really special and going to be a lot of fun. Every time I mention it to a DJ colleague they say they want to come and play for an hour… I'm going to have to be careful to keep my slot! I want to keep this as a special moment for me, for music, for Ibiza and for everyone in the room. It's a celebration of 30 years, with different DJs playing different things, passing by, jumping on, doing back2back – it's about sharing a mutual love of music and that's what’s important. We’ve come of age as a dance music community and this is about celebrating all that we’ve achieved and having a great time. It’s all about bringing back some of those special moments from back in the day and there’s no place on earth more perfect to do that in Ibiza than Pikes.”
From pioneering a scene in 1987 that paved the way for electronic music to still thrive today, to opening up the huge world of DJ residencies and kick-starting the US dance music explosion following his unprecedented residency at the Palms, Las Vegas, Paul Oakenfold is a true visionary and a man who breaks boundaries. Having already ticked off shows at some of the most incredible places on the planet including The Great Wall of China, The Hollywood Bowl, Madison Square Garden and most recently hiking 17,000 feet to perform Mt Everest’s Base Camp, Paul Oakenfold and Pikes finally come together at the most perfect moment in time, to celebrate something so big in the most beautifully intimate way. Respected and loved for being a very special place that represents the authentic, carefree, Balearic vibe of the real Ibiza, Pikes and Paul Oakenfold’s Generations residency quite simply belong together.
