‘A clubby thumper with a bonkers beat’ – thus says Phairo of this second slice of single joy from his ‘9’ project as solo artist, instead of sought-after producer for stars like ELIZA, Bruno Major, Sam Wills et al. ‘Drum Workout!’ follows the success of ‘Galacticon’, equally danceable and even more drum-rich.
‘Drum Workout!’: Cool, jazzy, exuberantly intricate percussion takes centre stage, the bones of dance laid bare, contrasted with a breakdown and climax of juddering string chords. If you’re not dancing to it, you’re drumming along to it on any available surface.
‘It was a lot of fun to make, cutting up the drum break to make each phrase rhythmically different and a bit mad, inspired by those old jungle tunes where it feels like it’s raining snare drums. I put in some bendy bass with the MS-20 and played the two chords at the end on the MFB. I think this one will also be a lot of fun to play in DJ sets!’
Three of the nine tracks from the eponymous ‘9’ will each take a solo bow on monthly release, before the ‘almost-album’ drops later this summer.
