City Of Hungry Ghosts - Pills and Polaroids EP

Multi Instrumentalist John Gomi is a busy man, navigating for more than 15 years between countless live performances, holding a DJ residency in Austin’s The Flat, crafting electronic textures both as Beat.Imprint (with Skye Ashbrook) and City Of Hungry Ghosts, and somehow also co-running the Beat Imprint label – he holds a solid vision of how and what he’s doing. Now, as a derivative of those ventures, the first official 12” of his City of Hungry Ghosts moniker is set for release.

Pills and Polaroids reflects Gomi’s uncommonly open ears and while it draws much influence from dance music, it's definitely not defined by its norms. Ostentatiously, it’s a kind-of horrific, mood-setting record which showcases a unique vision. From drones and unusual samples all the way up to daring arrangements, this vision leads to music that doesn't conform to formal contexts, but unquestionably feeds the brain with intrinsic necessities.

Opening track Dead Tired plays out as a misty swirl of drones while Crushed Sounds pays a small gesture to Star Wars’ The Imperial March until encountering distorted hip-hop drum beat and glitchy ambience. Mood changer Peculiar Hobbies settles the atmosphere in a peaceful composition of glistening and scintillating synths and Lucas Ray takes the track to a deep and hazy territory with his remix of Peculiar Hobbies.

John Gomi weaves experimental textures with club music forms and hint of psychedelia into a work which proves that the only thing we can surely expect from is the unexpected.

And together with Skye Ashbrook they've set up in Austin the studio, gallery & pop-up shop Mai-Dez running until December, showcasing art, design, music and more from both Beat.imprint and City of Hungry Ghosts.

Pills and Polaroids drops November 15th both on vinyl and Digital via Beat Imprint.
