Founded by Soul 2 Streets’ Maurice Dennemont, Zion Rose Recordings launches this month with Wookie’s first record of 2017 and a remit to champion contemporary black music.
“I've set the label up because it's been a dream of mine since my teens to run one: I love music and everything that comes with it. As a youth going and buying records on labels like Def Jam, Strictly Rhythm, V Recordings was always exciting and you knew you were getting quality. We want to be seen as the same, representing everything that is good in contemporary black music.
“I feel like the experience I've gained from 15+ years of DJing, Plugging records and management have given me a good view of the type of records that work well at radio and in the clubs. The industry is in an exciting time of growth, so it feels like the right time. Artist-wise we're starting with the legendary Wookie who's still at the top of his game, and we have some other old skool dons ready in the pipeline as well as some up and comers.” Maurice Dennemont
‘Reach Out’ is a fittingly impressive debut release for the label. Produced by the UK artist Wookie, the track has all the classic elements that you would expect from a Wooxstar production: skippy drums, an ocean deep bassline, pitching synths and a smooth, soulful vocal, delivered courtesy of longtime collaborator Xavier.
