For anthemic, melancholy Dancepop mixed with RnB and Jazz influences, find Renée Brandsen in your Spotify playlist. Growing up in the Netherlands, she expressed her spirit by writing poems and small songs, and engaging in plays and musicals at school. Writing songs for her final grade school musical, she discovered the joys of performing her original songs for the public, and she began to hone her craft. Since then, her writing style has blossomed into an eclectic mix of styles, refusing to conform to one style or genre, ranging from electronic RnB to jazz rock.
After moving to London to pursue a career in music, Renée utilises her music to express, celebrate and make sense of the joys and trials of girl to womanhood. She kicks off a new era with her latest release Call You Mine, a colourful blend of garage, jazz and dance in a pop-wrapper.
In “Call You Mine”, Renée collaborates with Curt Lopez Jr., resulting in a captivating blend of sounds. Renée recalls the session with Curt, stating, “I was feeling indecisive and had just had a big fight with my mom over the phone. Then, as he does, he plays these thick, sexy jazzy chords, and works out a beat as he goes. I really wanted to write about something that was relevant and true to me, instead of another obvious song about love.“
The track encapsulates the push and pull between Renée’s lover and her inner huntress, symbolizing the struggle to find love while striving to become an independent young woman.
Renée Brandsen shares her perspective on the song, saying, “Ever since I moved to London, I’ve just not felt the need to be in a relationship with someone. I’ve just been working on myself and my music, which working full-time outside of music, I find is enough of a job as-is. I just wanted to see a song that spoke on that part of womanhood, instead of just hearing about being in love.“
“Call You Mine” invites listeners on a journey that is both introspective and uplifting, showcasing Renée Brandsen’s remarkable talent for creating music that transcends boundaries. With its mysterious undertones, this track is perfect for both a contemplative listen and an energetic workout session.
