Set Mo – The Crush EP

Defected In The House residents Set Mo this month snap the seal on their fresh triple-tracker package ‘The Crush’ – a fine example of their inventive and distinct House flavours, which have earned them a reputation as a reliable source of seriously quality House cuts. The production and DJ connection present a fresh and creative format that shows off their personal hybrid of House – merging live percussion elements, pianos and other traditional sounds that are sweetly mixed with a more electronic backdrop. Their base for the release – Sydney’s Etcetc Music have developed a pool of highly-creative and inspiring talents for their imprint and with a swelling discography that’s reaching all corners of the globe – it’s a suitable spot for the Set Mo boys to flourish.

The lead single ‘Tiptoe’ premiered on Triple J’s Friday Night Shuffle with The Aston Shuffle has been getting serious pre-release plaudits with rotations heard from Jon George of RÜFÜS, KLP (Triple J), Danny T (Sweat It Out!), Gabe Gleeson (Purple Sneakers), Charlie Chux (Motorik), Husky (Random Soul), Grant Smillie (Nova/Channel V) and GT. The single is a smooth vocal workout that’s carried by the thick bass tones – a sound that Set Mo have made their own. The breakdowns are filled with a reflective string section and hold the backing for the contrasting plucked leads that fly over the higher ranges. The whole single is a typical Set Mo job – organic elements stacked over a classy House backdrop, giving the production a live feel that would be just as at home by the pool as it is for the after-hours.

The flip ‘Long Way From Home’ again shows off the signature Set Mo format – the production is carried by a dusty piano that scatters chords under the organic percussion sections and a vocal. The simplistic – yet highly effective production style has developed into a fine mix or traditional House and elements that make Set Mo projects sound like they could be performed live and not just played. Wrapping up the EP is ‘Forever’ a slightly more dance floor focused beat that’s less live-sounding than the supporting singles – but every bit as classy. The lead bass is memorable and deceptively high impact at volume. It’s a seriously attractive brand of House and their production values are clearly. With the attention the pair are already receiving in Australia and further beyond – you can bet you’ll be hearing a whole lot more from this prolific production pair.
