Shlohmo’s new album Dark Red arrives April 6th on True Panther/WeDidIt, and today he is proud to share the record’s closing statement, “Beams,” alongside a video for the track.
Directed by Jack Irving, the video for “Beams” intends to capture “the rawness and nostalgic carelessness we associate with being young,” says WeDidIt co-founder Nick Melons. He continues, “‘Beams’ as a track demanded that, with its relentless percussion stacked against an energetic yet emotional chord progression reminiscent of post-rock. I came across the director on Vine – he was documenting his days and nights in New York through six-second videos that looked like a modern day Kids shot entirely through an iPhone. We decided to attempt a collaboration, so he would send over batches of tiny clips from which we stitched together the video for ‘Beams.”
The video follows in the footsteps of “Buried,” a gritty odyssey on the dark, abandoned streets of LA which WIRED noted “might be the best horror short film produced so far in 2015.” While “Buried” seems steeped in a gloomy claustrophobia that slowly builds and emphasizes the anxiety and confusion of Dark Red, closing track “Beams” has a palpable energy as it morphs through its jungle-laden drum patterns and moves closer to breaking down and conquering the anguish that defines much of the album.
The second full-length album from Shlohmo (aka Henry Laufer,) Dark Red is an uncanny marriage of his ever-evolving, richly textured sound with shades of ’90s IDM, R&B, cassette-tape Jungle, and even sludge metal. Currently developing the live show for Dark Red, Shlohmo will perform at Austin’s SXSW next week at a special WeDidIt takeover at House of Vans with an international tour to follow.
Dark Red will be released April 7th, 2015 on True Panther/WeDidIt, with pre-orders available on iTunes, Amazon, Google Play and True Panther; instant downloads of “Beams,” “Buried” and “Emerge From Smoke” are available with pre-orders via iTunes and Amazon.
